Being a Relationship Manager
I was recently asked by a junior, how to be a successful Relationship manager (RM) or a Key account manager in Banking.
I believe as an RM, It’s important to possess a range of qualities that enable you to build strong relationships with clients and help them achieve their financial goals. Whether you’re working with individual customers or corporate clients, the following five qualities are essential for success in this role :
1) Strong Communication Skills
You must be able to listen carefully to your clients’ needs and concerns and communicate complex financial information in a clear and concise manner. Additionally, you need to be comfortable with a range of communication channels, including in-person meetings, phone calls, emails, and video conferences.
2) Deep Industry Knowledge
Another critical quality. You should have a solid understanding of the banking industry, financial markets, and various banking products and services. This knowledge will enable you to provide valuable advice to clients and help them make informed decisions about their finances.
3) Strong Analytical Skills
As a relationship manager in banking, you’ll be responsible for analyzing clients’ financial situations and providing advice on how to achieve their financial goals. This requires strong analytical skills, including the ability to analyze financial statements, evaluate risks, and identify investment opportunities. Additionally, you need to be able to think creatively and come up with innovative solutions to complex financial challenges.
4) Customer-Focused Attitude

Additionally, you need to be able to build trust with clients, demonstrating that you have their best interests at heart.
